International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS)

IIAS is the coordinating institute of the UKNA. It is a postdoctoral research centre based in Leiden, the Netherlands. IIAS’ objective is to encourage multi-disciplinary and comparative study of Asia and to promote national and international cooperation. Research and activities of IIAS are clustered around three core themes: Asian Cities, Global Asia and Asian Heritages. It is primarily an academic institution that hosts a large number of international fellows, but also seeks to operate in collaboration with other cultural and political institutions that focus on Asia. It organises seminars, workshops and conferences, as well as outreach activities for the general public. It publishes an internationally renowned newsletter and supports various academic publication series. It operates a comprehensive database containing information about researchers and institutes in the field of Asian Studies in Europe and worldwide.
