Thematic Working Groups

Three thematic working groups were established at the first UKNA Roundtable Forum, which was held in Delft, the Netherlands, from November 4-6, 2012.  The three thematic groups are “The Future of Cities”, “Cities by and for the People”, and “The Idea of the City”.  Each thematic working group will be led by a Steering Committee composed of three or four individuals (with at least one representative from an UKNA institute in “Greater China”, India and Europe).

 The tasks of each Steering Committee are to:

  • Decide on the overall substantive direction and focal topic(s) to be covered by their respective thematic areas;
  • Decide on the final output(s) of their thematic group, including edited volumes (consisting of journal-quality papers); case study series; seminars, workshops or roundtables; a blog or website; and/or other types of publications or projects.
  • Issue a “call for papers and contributions” within the UKNA community and outside (where relevant) to assess the level of interest among UKNA researchers and external parties to contribute to the final output(s) within the thematic area;
  • Agree on one or more editors who will author a concept paper framing the substantive direction and focal topic(s) to be covered by their thematic areas. The concept papers will be presented for discussion and comment at the UKNA panel at ICAS-8 in Macau (June 27, 2013) and on Day 1 of the Singapore Roundtable Forum (July 1, 2013).

In addition to the three groups identified above, the UKNA Secretariat welcomes suggestions for additional themes to be adopted by new thematic working groups. The only conditions for the selection of additional groups is that there should be sufficient interest among UKNA researchers to make contributions to this theme, and that topics to be covered by this theme are multi-disciplinary in nature and address at least one of the three broad UKNA substantive themes of urban environment, housing and neighborhoods, and urban heritage.

The following pages list the Steering Committee members and potential contributors for the three thematic groups identified at the Delft Roundtable, with their email contact details.  UKNA researchers who were not present at the Delft Roundtable are invited to add their names to the list of potential contributors for the thematic areas of their interest. This document will be periodically updated to reflect changes to the list of contributors.
