Asia Art Archive is an independent non-profit organisation initiated in 2000 in response to the urgent need to document and make accessible the multiple recent histories of art in the region. Our collection comprises a vast range of documentation, including the personal archives of significant artists, educators, and art professionals as well as key exhibitions and art spaces. We continually add to it through a research, acquisition, and digitisation process. Our library houses our physical collection, which encompasses reference books, monographs, exhibition catalogues, periodicals, and rare ephemeral materials.

The Baroda Archives: This archive is a digitisation project comprising of 40,000+ scanned and annotated documents that make up the four personal collections of Jyoti Bhatt, Ratan Parimoo, Gulammohammed Sheikh, and K.G. Subramanyan—artists and influential teachers in the Faculty of Fine Arts in Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda. This project brings to light the role that art schools played in shaping the field of visual arts in post-colonial India when pedagogy and experimentation coalesced to think about art anew.

Hong Kong Art History Research Project: This archive is built on previous and existing research efforts to develop a framework for a richer contextual picture of Hong Kong’s art ecology in the 1960–1970s. This project pursues strands of inquiry that include exhibitions, pedagogy, art writing in Chinese and English, and modes of exchange between Hong Kong and other geographies. Centred around a new series of professionally documented interviews that include multiple voices and perspectives, the project has also digitised a selection of materials from the archives.

Materials of the Future: Documenting Contemporary Chinese Art from 1980-1990: This archival project includes a comprehensive collection of primary research materials on art history of China in 1980s. AAA has collected hundreds of texts published during the 1980s, completed 75 video-taped interviews, produced a documentary film, and digitized the personal archives of renowned artists and curators, including Fei Dawei, Zhang Xiaogang, Zheng Shengtian, Lu Peng, Mao Xuhui and Wu Shanzhuan, to name a few.

Chiang Mai Social Installation: ‘Chiang Mai Social Installation’ is an alternative public art and cultural festival that incorporates art installations, performances, talks, and participatory events held in public places throughout the city. An unedited footage was taken at the third edition of ‘Chiang Mai Social Installation’, including a performance by Lee Wen, an opening speech by the Dean of Faculty of Fine Art, Chiang Mai University, at The 3rd Chiang Mai Social Installation, 19 November 1995.
