Section 1: Proposed case study project

Section 3: River bios (RCM component 1)

Component 1 dives into the history of the river city nexus. Each team “tells the story of the river city” through a mix of methods including archival and ethnographic research involving river-based stakeholders. The outputs of the river bios can be published as monographs or journal papers or as oral histories and/or multi-media projects.

Section 4: Mapping component (RCM component 2)

In Component 2 each team collects and maps data to visualize the changing relationship between river and city over time. The data collected should be historical as well as contemporary and spatial as well as non-spatial and should come from multiple (expert and non-expert) sources. The maps help to underpin the river bios in Component 1 and serve as a basis for the river revitalization efforts in Component 3. When done in a participatory fashion, mapping can be a method to bring together different stakeholders and pool different forms of “knowledge”.

Section 5: Revitalization objective (RCM component 3)

In Component 3 each project team designs and coordinates a river revitalization strategy aimed at overcoming the “disruption” that is at the core of the case study project. The revitalization strategy should be transformational and seek to improve resilience and “justice” for the human communities adjacent to the river and/or for the plant and animal species that co-exist with the river and which are an integral part of the ecology of the river-city.
